The 31st edition of the Sports Journalism Institute is underway with its second hybrid boot camp.
The 15 members of the class will begin their bootcamp journey virtually on Thursday with an orientation, a few sessions, and a sports check to get their feet wet. The students will fly to Phoenix on June 1, where sessions will continue at the Cronkite School at Arizona State University.
The Class of 2023 is filled with accomplished students, including Damon Brooks Jr, whose peers selected the senior to give the commencement speech at the University of Maryland’s Merrill School of Journalism. Brooks will intern at The Washington Post this summer.
Lawrence Price of Northwestern was given the NABJ Sports Task Force’s Larry Whiteside Scholarship.
The aspiring sports journalists of this year’s class will bring the number of SJI alums to more than 360. More than half of those graduates remain involved in sports media or communications.
