I really appreciated the honesty coming from The Athletic media reporter Richard Deitsch and Los Angeles Times deputy sports editor Iliana Limon Romero. They mentioned this idea of not getting down on yourself and continuing to find opportunities even when you didn’t get the job you were eagerly seeking. Opportunities are out there, but we have to be flexible and willing to come out of our comfort zone sometimes.
Personally, hearing their words gave me confidence that I can find success in the industry if I put in the hard work and am willing to make adjustments. Iliana showed me the importance of why we need more people of color to be editors. Being in that position allows us to make some form of change and be able to help other journalists in the field, which is something I would like to do later in my career. Iliana also taught me a lesson about standing up for what you believe in even when the people around the room may disagree. We can’t make change if we stay silent.
