The Sports Journalism Institute is now accepting applications for the Class of 2021.
SJI’s first class convened in 1992 and next summer’s class will be our 29th to go through boot camp, a deadline-intensive week of covering sports events, interviewing athletes, coaches and prominent sports media figures. Boot camp has been held at a number of locations, including the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism and, for the past two years and again in 2021, Arizona State’s Cronkite School.
Boot camp is aimed at helping students prepare for internships which SJI helps set up through our partners in the sports media, including ESPN, USA Today and the Gannett family of newspapers and websites, Yahoo! Sports, Sports Illustrated, the Denver Post and the Houston Chronicle, to name a few.
You can apply online and upload the necessary documents by clicking on the link at the end of this article. Deadline for applications is Nov. 2
“Boot camp—whether in person or in the virtual world, as it was in 2020—is an experience like no other,” said co-founder Leon Carter, a vice president at ESPN. “Students begin the week as strangers and leave as part of an extended family of more than 300 SJI grads who have come before them.”
