APSE is back in Las Vegas for second time in three years

The saying goes: everything is better in Las Vegas … right? As that might not be the correct answer, for the common nickname “Sin City” in Nevada it’s currently putting its name in the running for it.

The 50th annual Associated Press Sports Editors Conference will take place on July 9-12 at the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel & Casino Hotel for the second time in two years.

This year one of the highlighted speakers will be NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.

Glen Crevier, who is the APSE Conference coordinator, believes that this year's turnout should be a positive attendance from last year's awards ceremony, which was held in Indianapolis.

“Roughly 90 to 100 people is probably what we expect,” said Crevier on the attendance for the awards ceremony in July. “We expect people who are in attendance at the conference as well as some honoraries that attend to get their award.”

The ceremony is honoring sports writers’ best work from 2022, best sports sections and choosing from four different categories in the APSE contest, each ranging from 10 to 12 winners in their respective category.

Crevier said being innovative and running with new ideas is something that he and other coordinators on the APSE committee are trying to bring new faces and to keep bringing people back.

Having the new Las Vegas Raiders moving from Oakland, the Las Vegas Aces relocating in 2018, adding new renovations to their arena, the Oakland Athletics possibly making a transition in the next coming years and the Las Vegas Grand Prix taking place in November, being the first Formula One race in the city since 1982. Las Vegas is starting to see a new attraction that it hasn't seen before, the sports scene.

“There's a lot of attraction there,” he said. “... Las Vegas appeals to our conference attendees for possibly gambling, entertainment or some of it could just be good dining.”

Having the conference in Las Vegas two times in three years might be a wonder for some, but the reason for it was due to COVID-19. There was then a trade-off between the APSE and the Flamingo Hotel. The conference that was held in 2021 was originally dated for June but was eventually pushed back to early August due to COVID still being a threat too many. So, the Flamingo Hotel agreed to let APSE push back the date but agreed that they had to return in two years.

“These types of things have been happening when people put on certain conferences because of COVID,” Crevier said.

“I’m excited about planning the event and making it interesting and meaningful for the audience.”
