Helping women and minorities get into newsrooms since 1993

Frank Bonner

My name is Frank Bonner and I’m a sports journalism graduate student at Indiana University-Purdue University. My path to sports journalism started at 16 years old when I joined my Ben Davis High School newspaper as a sports writer during my sophomore year. It only took one semester to realize sports writing was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. My dream has always been to cover college or professional sports. I continued to pursue that dream by getting a bachelor’s degree in journalism at Indiana University before landing my first professional job at The Republic, a newspaper in Columbus, Indiana. The Republic granted me the opportunity to grow and gave me the confidence I needed to start my career. However, most of my reporting was centered around high school sports, and I was still chasing my dream of becoming a college or professional sports reporter. I decided to quit my job after nearly two years to attend IUPUI. My goal has been to gain the skills I need that will help me get to the next level. My time at IUPUI and The Republic has helped me become a member of the SJI Class of 2019. I’m hoping that SJI will sharpen my writing skills so that I can be better prepared when entering my next job at Tulsa World. I was offered an internship at the Kansas City Star before being offered a job to over Oklahoma State athletics starting this summer. I want to thank the staff at the Kansas City Star for extending the opportunity.
