Helping women and minorities get into newsrooms since 1993

Eric He

My name is Eric He, a recent graduate of the University of Southern California and an aspiring storyteller. I say “storyteller” because that is why I want to get into journalism: to tell stories. I love looking beyond the box score to find people, events or things that are overlooked, that deserve to have their story told. Even as I have covered hundreds of games through previous internships and at the student paper, I find that the stories I am most proud of writing are the ones that dig deeper than who played and who won. Sports are amazing in so many ways. They provide a level playing field where anyone — regardless of race or background — can succeed. They can produce breathtaking triumphs or heartbreaking defeats. They can unite a community — that might otherwise have nothing in common — to come together and root for their team. The stories that come out of what sports provide are the stories I have been lucky enough to tell. At the Southern California News Group this summer, I hope to continue to shed light on the topics that are hidden under the surface. Los Angeles is one of the best sports cities in the country. It has been my home away from home for the last four years, and I can’t wait to return this summer at a paper that I follow and read regularly.
