Sports Journalism Institute

Helping women and minorities get into newsrooms since 1993

Daniel Oyefusi

My name is Daniel Oyefusi. I am a recent graduate of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, College Park. While in school, I covered Maryland basketball and football, while also reporting on the Maryland legislature for the journalism school’s student-run news organization. I am a native of Baltimore, Maryland, and as I child, I often read the sports section of The Baltimore Sun while my dad drove me to school. While I gravitated to sports, I opened up to topics like politics and world news at the advice of my dad, which eventually inspired me to obtain a minor in Law and Society. I’ve always been interested in sports, but as I grew older, I learned that sports are a reflection of life — with a wide sea of stories begging to be told. This summer I will be working as an intern for The Commercial Appeal in Memphis, Tennessee. I’m excited about the opportunity to work with a sports staff in a newsroom and environment that I’m not used to. As a part of the Sports Journalism Institute, I’m looking forward to honing my craft and improving my reporting skills before my internship and an eventual full-time job.
