Damichael Cole

My name is Damichael Cole and I’m a recent graduate from the University of Tennessee. As a child, I had a deep passion and connection with sports that started at about five years old. In college, I covered twelve sports during my first three years on campus. This changed my perspective on sports, but my passion was still the same. Storytelling and sports investigative reporting began to intrigue me. My junior year I served as the sports editor of the student newspaper, The Daily Beacon and interned at WATE News in Knoxville. As a senior, I wrote for three local newspapers covering prep sports and the NBA. My biggest motivation is my mother. Her daily sacrifices for me and my sibling have strengthened my work ethic and given me an appreciative perspective of what I have and can accomplish. Through SJI, I want to build connections and learn from some of the best sports journalists in the world. I’ll be interning at Sports Illustrated in New York City. To be a shining light in a room full of stars is difficult, but I know SJI will give me the tools to stand out not just by color or race but quality, professionalism, and work ethic.
