Helping women and minorities get into newsrooms since 1993

My name is Tashan Reed and I’m a 2018 graduate of the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri. In June, I’ll intern at the Commercial Appeal in Memphis, thanks to the Sports Journalism Institute. I previously wrote for the SBNation blog Rock M Nation, the St. Louis American, and the Columbia Missourian. My decision to pursue the SJI opportunity was largely guided by my mentor Greg Bowers. Greg is the former Columbia Missourian sports editor and helped bring SJI to Mizzou in 2012. He suggested the opportunity to me during my freshman year and I was able to meet Leon Carter when I was a sophomore. I stayed in touch with him and then applied in my final year of college. I’m grateful for this opportunity and excited to jumpstart my professional journalism career. Along with being passionate about sports, I’m deeply tied to civil rights issues and telling stories focused on the African American community. I was born and raised in Ferguson, Missouri, and lived through the Ferguson protests in 2014 and the Mizzou protests in 2015. Those experiences not only helped me become a better person, but also a better journalist. Throughout my career, I hope to have the opportunity to intertwine my interests in sports and human rights.
