Sports Journalism Institute

Helping women and minorities get into newsrooms since 1993

I’m Michael Curtis and I decided to pursue sports journalism after my freshman year at Tennessee State University. When I graduated, I was enthusiastic, but unprepared for the rigors of this industry, without an understanding of the dedication it takes to be successful. But since enrolling in graduate school at Middle Tennessee State, I have rededicated myself to my craft. When I was introduced to SJI by alumni Cameron Wolfe and Malika Andrews, I knew this program would help me take the next step. I have no doubt that by being part of SJI’s 26th class will help me improve my storytelling ability, interview skills and writing skills. I know it won’t be easy, but I’ve learned that nothing worth having ever is. I’ll be taking the skills I learn at SJI to the Knoxville News Sentinel as an intern this summer.
