Sports Journalism Institute

Helping women and minorities get into newsrooms since 1993

My name is Alaa Abdeldaiem, and I am a 2018 psychology and journalism graduate of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). During my time at IUPUI, I was a sports reporter for the Campus Citizen, the university’s independent student news website, and an active ambassador for the Sports Capital Journalism Program. My time at the university allowed me to cover Indianapolis Colts and Pacers games, the 2016 NCAA Women’s Big Ten Tournament, the 2016 NFL Draft, and the 2018 Rose Bowl. Outside of school, I worked for the Indianapolis Star as a sports clerk and correspondent, and joined the Colts as a gameday public relations intern for the 2017 season. I consider myself blessed to have a platform to continue to explore and contribute to the power of sports journalism. At my internship with this summer, I hope that, in addition to fulfilling my day-to-day responsibilities, I can further demonstrate how one sports story, profile or column has the ability to reshape how the audience views a particular subject. My experiences thus far, including SJI, have been stepping stones toward making that a reality.
